Hey ladies did you know that by balancing your hormones you can prevent breast and possibly uterine cancer? Oh I know you’ve probably been told or maybe have even read articles that say to stay away from hormone replacement therapy (especially estrogen) because it causes cancer. Well that is only half the story. You should stay away from synthetic hormones as they are fifty times more potent than your own natural hormones. But by rebalancing your hormones with natural bio-equivalent hormones you are actually increasing apoptosis; that is your body’s ability to find a cancer cell and kill it.

Dr. Bruce Worrell (internal medicine and hormone specialist) is the owner of the Center for Optimal Vitality in Mason Ohio where he specializes in balancing hormones using bio-identical pellet therapy. He has researched this particular topic of breast cancer and is a proud sponsor of the Bras with Flair on the Square event October 23 and 24.
Synthetic vs. bio-identical:
In 2005, the International Journal of Cancer reported on a study of 54,000 women on hormone replacement. All were on bio-identical (bio-equivalent) estrogen plus either bio-identical progesterone or progestin (a synthetic progesterone). The women on the all bio-identical combination had a 10 percent decrease in risk of breast cancer compared to a 40 percent increase with the synthetic progestin. A follow-up study in 2007 in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment reported on 80,000 women: those women on bio-identical hormones had no increase in the rate of breast cancer while those on synthetic had an increase of 69 percent increase in risk. It is also important to consider the type of hormone replacement therapy being performed.
Balanced Hormone Replacement:
It is also important to consider the type of hormone replacement therapy being prescribed. Testosterone has been shown to lower the risk of breast cancer when given with estrogen and estrogen/progesterone therapy (1, 2). Therefore, a balanced hormone replacement approach is better than estrogen alone.
Bio-identical hormone pellets:
Dr. Gino Tutera, founder of Sottopelle (trained and certified Dr. Worrell) completed a study of 967 from 1992-2002. In this group of women who were using the sottopelle therapy, there was only one case of breast cancer. Given the incidence of breast cancer being one out of nine- you would deduct that from this ten year study that there should have been over 100 cases. What can we learn from this study? The pellets release a small amount of hormone daily. Because it is biologically identical to our own natural hormones it does not produce excess stimulation of the estrogen receptors in the breast. Thus, you could conclude from the above study that the pellet therapy is actually breast protective.
